Island Line will be running a reduced service over the coming days and until further notice due to technical issues – with just 1 train now available for service.
The 81-year-old trains, which have run on the Isle of Wight network since 1992, are really showing their age. Technical issues have now forced engineers to pull one out of service, leading to an hourly timetable between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin.
An amended timetable will come into force on Sunday (15th September) with trains leaving Ryde Pier Head at XX:49 and Shanklin at XX:18.
Although a normal service will be in operation on Monday, things will revert back to an hourly service on Tuesday 17th September (also Ryde Pier Head at XX:49 and Shanklin at XX:18).
This amended timetable will remain in force ‘until further notice’.
No information has been made available through the South Western Railway (SWR) or National Rail websites, nor through social media. Passengers have been informed through means of a printed poster in the stations (pictured above).
Island line would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
UPDATE @ 10:20 – Island Echo has been told that the original poster (photographed above) is incorrect.
The hourly service until further notice will come into force at the start of Wednesday (18th September). This is due to the second train having to come out of service at the end of Tuesday due to a mileage-based inspection.
A spokesperson for South Western Railway has said:
“We are sorry but due to a safety issue with one of the Island Line trains we are currently only able to run one train an hour from start of service on Wednesday until further notice.
“The hourly service will connect with the ferries at Ryde Pier Head (xx.18 departures from Shanklin and xx.49 departures from Ryde Pier Head).
“We will return to our normal two trains an hour timetable as soon as possible, but the age of these trains and the difficulty in securing replacement parts, means this may take longer than normal.”

Surely a tin of paint could be purchased and used on the train whilst in for repair. The state of them is embarrassing. More like a third world country’s transport. An embarrassment when shown on the Michael Portillo programme I saw on tv, not too long ago.
Third world country…… my wife just spent over 5 hours semi conscious on a gurney in the hallway of st Mary’s hospital, another lady had already spent over 9 hours waiting for a bed. No mate we don’t have a third world train service or hospital, maybe fourth or fifth world at best. The staff in both services are pushed to their limit are are fabulous under the circumstances. Obviously for our esteemed leaders we can push our infrastructure more by building thousands of new homes…..good for investment eh!
Hoping both ladies will be ok.
They are heritage trains
Maybe you petition the Government to purchase new underground trains from bombardier as for more housing I agree the infrastructure cannot cope with the the amount of houses being built someone somewhere has got to say enough is enough no more new houses until infrastructure is brought up to date
What a joke this line is .spend some cash for Christ’s sake.
I don’t know what’s worse, your stupidity or poor grammar.
Haven street has rolling stock in better condition.
007 Has been out of service for sometime now. With 009 taken out of service last year and being used for parts something does not add up somehow.
483 007 has been condemned from entering service again not sure why and what caused it but that will never see the light of day again
Was under the impression that the new company was going to refurbish the rolling stock, obiviously not.
Typical.
Just 81 years to prepare for it then……..
The transport for this island does make me laugh
It makes me cry
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has Steam locomotives newer than these tin pots. The system is just a waste of space at the moment, should either be updated before it gets any more dangerous … or used as a bus lane.
Be fab to see the steam railway get back into Ryde, but that’s just a bit of a fantasy at the moment.
Yep, more overpriced buses are needed rather that electric trains.
They genuinely can’t go to Ryde as there’s connection from the Havenstreet line to the Shanklin line. And the tunnel between St John’s Road and Esplanade was intended for use of underground trains so they made it big enough Just for Ex-Underground stock this meaning no other train can run through.
Not so Matthew, the tunnel had steam trains running through it in the sixties, I drove 03 standard shunt engines through it in the nineties (engineering works) the tunnel is prone to flooding so the track bed was raised so now only fit for underground stock. Between the esplanade station and the tunnel mouth you will find the old pump house that kept the tide down in the tunnel, hope the info helps.
The state of our trains is a total embarrassment! At least one of them has the roof covering flaking off. When are we going to get some replacement trains? South Western Railway seem to be totally ignoring their commitment to the Island Line.
Maybe if they had a ticket machine at St Johns they would have the money to fix it. The guard does not have time to deal with all the requests for tickets. As a result it’s a good chance you’ll get a free ride.
Definitely NOT from the guards I know.
We were on the Isle of Wight last week for a few days, during our stay we saw 3 different operating units…4, 6 and 8…seems strange only one is operating now
think 483 008 reached its limits on milage awhile ago so cannot be used anymore, so that leaves with 483 004 or 483 006 in service and the other No longer able to be used
Bring back the steam locos that are preserved from the preserved railway on the island,at least it will provide an extra service, even if it is a bit slower..
It’s about time somebody bit the bullet and sorted this line out. They have been aware that these trains are life expired for years and have found every excuse in the book to sit on there thumbs.
We just need to bring steam trains back then we wont have any of this shit happening or bring in diesel engines
Soon as we get rid of these heaps of junk, let the council and Southern vectis run them the better, quick before the other train can’t be used
Lets hope they can fit round wheels this time, and stop that dire squealing noise, and I am not referring to the customers horror when boarding.
What happened to the plans that they were going to get more rolling stock from London? Something needs to be done and soon.
To all the people here! Enjoy 5G! And the nice grey interiors in buildings. And of course nice white LED lights everywhere you go! And all other stuff new! And of course the landfills that are stuffed with your old rubbish and the ocean with plastic soup! You just got to love life in the 21st Century!
